Decide what you need to change
A postgraduate degree can deepen a practice or support a change of direction. Write down the skills you already have, the work you want to do and the gap between them.
Check background requirements
Some programmes welcome several academic backgrounds; others require a related degree or practice. Read each official requirement rather than assuming all MA or M.Des. courses are conversion courses.
Show your thinking
Use project evidence to explain the problem, your role, choices, tests and learning. A portfolio that shows decisions is more useful than a collection of polished images without context.
Compare the learning environment
Check supervision, workshops, collaborative opportunities and the final project. Ask the institution how students with your background are supported.
